Timothy Board Jr. speaks about dangerous deceptions and how to combat them.
[0:00] Timothy, come on up and share the Word of God with us. Thanks.! Thank you. Good morning, everyone. It's great to be here and thank you Pastor Rambeck for your kind words.
[0:16] ! I appreciate all of you. I know many of you as good and dear friends. And it's a blessing to share with you the Word this morning.
[0:27] So, please take your Bibles with me and open to Genesis chapter 3. Four dangerous deceptions and how to combat them.
[0:44] This is Genesis chapter 3, 1 through 8. Which will be our passage this morning. Genesis chapter 3, verses 1 through 8.
[0:57] And we will read together. Genesis 3, 1 through 8. It's a read aloud from the New King James Version. It says, Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made.
[1:14] And he said to the woman, Has God indeed said, You shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden, But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat it, Nor shall you touch it, Lest you die.
[1:39] Then the serpent said to the woman, You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it, Your eyes will be opened, And you will be like God, Knowing good and evil.
[1:54] So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, That it was pleasant to the eyes, And a tree desirable to make one wise, She took of its fruit, And ate.
[2:05] She also gave to her husband with her, And he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, And they knew that they were naked, And they sewed fig leaves together, And made themselves coverings.
[2:18] And they heard the sound of the Lord God Walking in the garden in the cool of the day. And Adam and his wife hid themselves From the presence of the Lord God Among the trees of the garden.
[2:34] Thus far the reading of God's holy word. May he add his blessing to its reading. Now four dangerous deceptions, And how to combat them.
[2:49] Satan hates God. Satan hates you and I. And because of this, We are all at spiritual war. We are all engaged in a battle.
[3:02] Not passively. But we are all engaged as active players, Participants. This battle that we are engaged in Is not a physical battle.
[3:13] It is a battle that rages over The hearts and souls of everyone you see, Both here and out there. This battle, This spiritual battle, Was started back here in the garden.
[3:27] When our first parents rebelled against Their creator God. You see, Almighty creator God, He existed from before the creation.
[3:41] He existed As the eternal king of kings. And he is the self-existent one. He relies on no one For his existence.
[3:52] That is, Such is the character of God. He existed Forever and ever Before the beginning. But then, We see, In Genesis chapter 1, It says, In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
[4:10] So he created All things for his glory. And, It says, And God said, Let there be light.
[4:20] He spoke all things, Out of, He spoke all things into existence, Out of nothing. It's called ex nihilo. Out of nothing.
[4:31] He spoke all things, And by the word of his mouth, He created. And we see, All throughout Genesis chapter 1, How God created, And then, On the sixth day of creation, God stooped down, And he created, He took of the dust of the ground, And he created man, The pinnacle of his creation.
[4:57] In Genesis chapter 2, Verse 7, It says, And the Lord God formed man, Of the dust of the ground, And breathed into his nostrils, The breath of life, And man became a living being.
[5:10] So God had created the heavens, The earth he created, On day one, He created, Separated, Created the light, And then he separated the light, From the darkness, Created the land, And all the, And all the, And all the, Things in, All the stars, And planets, And the sun, The moon, On day four, He created, All the sea creatures, And the birds of the air, And then on day six, He created all the land, Creatures, And, Man, In the image of God, And mind you, Man is the pinnacle, Of God's creation, Because, We have been created, In his image, And what exactly, Does that mean, To be, Have been created, In the image of God, That means, That God created us, So we're created, Unlike all the other creatures, Because we have, Something that,
[6:11] The other creatures, Do not have, So we have, The ability, To specially, Relate, To God, Because we have, He has created us, With a mind, Will, And emotions, And spirit, To live in communion, And have a good relationship, With him, To be, Friends, With God, That's what the image of God is, And that's what makes, Human life, Different, From animal life, And that's what makes us, All special, But as you see here, In Genesis 3, The devil, Was an angel, He was a special angel, Created by God, But he rebelled, As we see throughout scripture, The devil,
[7:11] He rebelled, He wanted to be like God, And, He was, He led a rebellion, And he was cast, To the earth, And we see here, In Genesis 3, The devil is desperately, Trying to destroy, The pinnacle of God's creation, He's trying to destroy, The image of God, To turn, The pinnacle of God's creation, Mankind, Away from the good relationship, That was, Designed to be between God and man, So we see that Satan's deception here, Leads to the fall of man, See in the beginning of these verses, Eve was deceived, She was, Deceived into believing a lie, And going against the command of God, To not eat of the fruit of the tree, Of the knowledge of good and evil, Eve was deceived, Adam, As we see throughout scripture,
[8:12] He was not deceived, He blatantly rebelled, He knew what he was doing, But he chose to, Shove God's word aside, As we see in Romans 5, 12, It says, Just as through one man, Sin entered the world, And death through sin, And thus death spread to all men, Because all have sinned, So with this rebellion, Against the creator, Death was introduced into God's perfect creation, Before that there was no death, Because as you see in the end of Genesis chapter 1, It says, Then God saw everything that he had made, And indeed it was very good, It was not just good, This is the God of all the glories of heaven, Saying that his creation was very good, And that should give us insight into, How beautiful it was, In the beginning, And it is still beautiful today,
[9:14] Even though it is marred, By the effects of sin, So when men rebelled, Against God, It brought corruption, And sin, And death into the world, Death passed upon all men, Because all have sinned, And this is, This is the malady, The sickness, That plagues the hearts of all mankind, Now, This morning, I'd like us all to understand, From this passage, Genesis chapter 3, 1 through 8, That when we believe lies about God, And his word, Our relationship with God is hindered, When we believe lies about God and his word, Our relationship with God is hindered, See the same lies, That Satan used here in the garden, To deceive,
[10:16] Eve, And, How Adam, Rebelled against the creator, These same lies, And the same deceptions we see here, Are the same deceptions, That keep people enslaved to falsehood, Even today, We call it the Genesis 3 attack, We understand that truth, Truth sets free, Truth sets people free, But falsehood enslaves, Truth is in accordance, With God's character, Falsehood is against God's character, So, When we believe lies about God and his word, Things that are not true, That are against his character, That destroys our relationship, With our almighty creator, So, This morning, From Genesis chapter 3, 1 through 8, We're going to take a look at four deceptions, Seen here in the text,
[11:17] Four of these deceptions, And how they compromise our relationship with God, Four deceptions, The first deception, That we must guard against, Is the deception of questioning God's word, The deception of questioning God's word, Look here in Genesis chapter 3, Verse 1, It says, Now the serpent was more cunning, Than any beast of the field, Which the Lord God had made, And he said to the woman, Has God indeed said, You shall not eat of every tree, Of the garden?
[12:00] See, The devil, Satan, Has come into the, The body of the serpent, And here he begins, Compromising God's creation, He begins his deceit, By attacking the trustworthiness, Of God's word, As you see earlier, In chapter 2, The Lord God, He created man, He placed him in the garden of Eden, He gave him a job, He gave him a job to do, And he says, The Lord God, In verse, In chapter 2, Verse 16, It says, And the Lord God commanded the man, Saying, Of every tree of the garden, You may freely eat, But of the tree of the knowledge, Of good and evil, You shall not eat, For in the day you eat of it, You shall surely die, So the devil, You see here, He begins by questioning, Did God really say that?
[12:58] Did God really say, Don't eat from that tree? This is an attack against the, Against the trustworthiness of God's word.
[13:14] May I submit to you that this same attack, Is what we see, Brought up in our culture, All over the place. We still deal with this attack today.
[13:27] And it is a, Great temptation of mankind, To doubt, The clear words of scripture. And we see, One major place that, The Bible is greatly questioned, And denied, In culture, Is in many, Secular colleges and universities.
[13:49] And when we, When we encountered, The lie, The deception that, You can't trust God's word. When we encounter this, We must be ready, To defend, The veracity of God's holy word.
[14:10] So if we truly believe, The Bible to be the word of God, Holding the divine answer, For the sin of mankind, And we must not be found, To scratch our heads, When questions about the reliability, Of God's word, Of the Bible are raised.
[14:28] We must know what we believe, And why we believe it. And we must know how to, To defend, The truth of God's word. We understand, The Bible is true, It is the most unique book, In all the universe.
[14:48] Not only does it claim, To be the word of God, But the internal evidence, You look throughout, All of scripture, And the amount of men, That were involved, The Bible was written by, At least over, At least 40 men, Multiple continents, In at least three languages, And it is all, Unified, The central figure of the Bible, Is the Lord Jesus Christ.
[15:14] And the Bible has, So much, Historical evidence, To back up what it says.
[15:26] We see, Everything that we can, Observe, And study through archaeology, Points to, Archaeology validates, The truth of God's word.
[15:37] So there are so many things, So many evidences, Both internal, And external, That point to the truth, That the Bible is indeed, The word of God.
[15:48] Besides that, We see the testimony, Of so many lives, All throughout history, That have been changed, Radically, By Jesus Christ. So we as Christians, Must not be afraid, To defend, The truth of God's word.
[16:04] We must know, Why we believe, What we believe, And know how to defend it. So why is, Doubting God's word, Dangerous?
[16:15] As we see the, Here in the garden, The deception of, Doubting, The clear word of God.
[16:25] Why is, Doubting God's word, Dangerous? Because the truth is, That God's word, Is the very foundation, Upon which, We are to live, Our lives.
[16:37] Because God did not, Create us, As mankind, To live independent, Of him, And his wisdom. So we were all created, To live, In loving communion, With this, With our, Creator.
[16:53] We were made to live, As friends, With God. To bring glory to him, In that relationship. God's word, God's word is very important.
[17:07] And when we deny God's word, We are, Doubting, God himself. God's word is very important, In creation, And redemption.
[17:18] We see, In Genesis 1, In verse 3, It says, God said, Let there be light. He spoke, All things into existence, By his word.
[17:30] He not only spoke all things, He not only created all things, By his word, But he sustains, All things, To this day, By his word. You see, In Hebrews chapter 1, Speaks of, Jesus Christ, Upholding all things, By the word of his power.
[17:47] He holds our breath, In his very hand. Not only that, But faith, In God, Comes by hearing, His word. You see, Romans chapter 10, Verse 17, Faith comes by hearing, Hearing by the word of God.
[18:02] God's word is very important. And also, We understand that God's word, Is, Given, So that we can know, What's right, What's wrong, How to get right, And how to stay right.
[18:18] And, Just as 2nd Timothy chapter 3 declares, Says, All scripture is given by inspiration of God. It's the very words of God, Breathed out to man.
[18:31] And is profitable for doctrine, For reproof, For correction, For instruction in righteousness. So how to get right, How to stay right, What's right, And what's wrong. God's word applies to all of life.
[18:46] And the devil seeks to undermine God. God's word. So do not, Do not be led astray to, Doubting the clear words of God.
[19:01] See, He's given us his words, So that we may know him. So hold fast to his word. The second deception, First we have, The deception of questioning God's words.
[19:14] As you see in, Right here in Genesis 3 verse 1, Did God indeed say, Casting doubt on God's word. The second deception, That we must guard against, Is that of doubting, God's good care for us.
[19:34] Right here, Look here in verses, Verses, 4 and 5, After the woman, She recognizes the attack, On God's word, In verse 2, She says, We may eat of the trees of the garden, But of the fruit of the tree, Which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat it, Nor shall you touch it, Lest you die.
[19:58] So she begins to defend, But then what does the serpent say? He says, He clearly contradicts, A clear word of God. He says, You shall not surely die. What does he say after that?
[20:11] For God knows, That in the day you eat of it, Your eyes will be opened, And you will be like God, Knowing good and evil. He's basically telling her, God isn't as good as you think he is.
[20:31] He's trying to hold back something, That's good. Because you deserve good. You deserve all good things.
[20:42] But in reality, Satan's trying to hold, God is trying to hold this back from you. Holding back a good thing. He knows that in the day you eat of it, Your eyes will be opened, And you will be like God, Knowing good and evil.
[21:01] So he's doubting, He's casting doubt, Upon God's character. He attacks, God's word, And now he's, He's attacking the character of God. And he's trying to get, The woman to, Doubt, Her creator's care.
[21:21] So have you ever, Coveted something? It's an issue that we all deal with. Wanting something, That is not ours to have. There is a reason, That thou shalt not covet, Is one of the ten commandments.
[21:39] It's covetousness, Wanting something that, We don't have, That, Is not attainable, That the Lord has not given, Covetousness is, Foundationally, Rooted in a distrust, Of God's good care for us.
[21:55] The opposite of covetousness, Is contentment, And contentment, Contentment, Says that I have, All that I need, Because I know, My father in heaven, Has my best interest, In mind.
[22:14] What the devil, Is trying to do, Is create, A desire, For something, That the woman, Did not have. He's saying, You really want, You really need these, This fruit, It's going to make you better.
[22:35] But God's holding it back. So he attacks, The faithfulness of God's character. But the truth, That must not be denied, Is that the almighty, Creator, He made his creation, Very good.
[22:49] He breathed into, Adam's nostrils, The breath of life. He is the fountainhead, And the giver of all life. He's the source, Of all life and goodness.
[23:03] But when we doubt, His care, And his good will, For each of us, We're essentially saying that, We know better than God. So do not be led astray, To question, The character of God, As he has revealed himself, To us in his word, We realize that, Our breath, Is given to us, Day by day, Our breath is in his hand.
[23:32] We rely on his, Sustaining hand, Every day. So trust, In him. So do not be led astray, To doubt God's word, Do not be led astray, To doubt God's good care, Because we trust, We must trust in him, Unwaveringly.
[23:53] But the third deception, That we must guard against, Is the deception, Of following your heart. The deception, Of following your heart.
[24:03] Genesis chapter 3, Verse 6, It says, So when the woman saw, That the tree was good for food, She sees it differently now.
[24:16] She sees that it's, Good for food, That it was pleasant to the eyes, And a tree desirable, To make one wise, She took of its fruit, And ate. She also gave to her husband, With her, And he ate.
[24:29] So the devil deceived, The woman to, Question the clear words of God. To doubt, God's care for her, Knowing that he is the one, Who knows what's best, For his creation.
[24:48] But here, We see there's, The deception, Of following, Your heart. Have you ever heard, Things, Like, Something that goes like, This, What does your heart tell you?
[25:03] Or, Just follow your heart. Do what you feel. The lie is, That, God cannot be trusted, But that you, You're the one, Who really have your best, You really have your best interests, At heart.
[25:27] Because God can't be trusted, And he really does not, He's really holding things back from you. You know better than God. That is the lie. Satan essentially is saying, God is not as good, And as glorious as he seems, You deserve the best.
[25:45] He's holding back, What is good. You should know better than that. So you see Eve here, She sees the tree, Differently now.
[25:58] She began, Walking, By sight, Rather than by childlike trust, By faith, In her, Creator. It's the danger of walking, By sight, Rather than by faith.
[26:13] Faith trusts God, What, What he has given, What he has revealed to us, Walking by sight, Is making decisions, Based on, What we, Really feel like.
[26:29] I'm reading, I'm reading a book, Currently, For, A bible exposition, Class, On, The book of Genesis, And this book is, Called, Beginnings under attack, The author, Bill Sheffield, He writes, About this passage, Of scripture.
[26:49] He says, Eve made a decision, Based on her evaluation, Of the circumstances. In spite of what she had, Previously understood, To be the will of God, Her senses, Took control.
[27:01] Something had happened, In the way that, She saw that God, She saw what God, Had forbidden. She no longer saw it, As something which, Presented a danger, To be avoided, God's command.
[27:15] Instead, That became, That one thing, That was held, Back from her, By God. That became the very thing, She most desired. When she saw the fruit, She saw it differently.
[27:26] It was as though, She had never seen it before. Dread was replaced, By desire. This becomes, The most desirable, Piece of fruit, In all of Eden.
[27:37] All other trees, Were forgotten. She must have this fruit. Food. And she considered this, As she considered it, It looked, Irresistibly delicious. Not only was it good for food, It was attractive, In its form, To a point of being, Beautiful and pleasant, To the eyes.
[27:57] With the additional assurance, That it held the mystical power, To make one wise, Her desire for that one thing, Became overwhelming. Now turn over, In your Bibles, With me, To 1st John, Chapter 2.
[28:13] 1st John, Chapter 2, Verse 16. 1st John 2, Verse 16.
[28:25] See the woman here, She is, Tempted, By what she sees, Of the tree.
[28:38] 1st John 2, This should, Shed some light, On what we see, In Genesis chapter 3. 1st John 2, Let's begin reading, In verse 15.
[28:50] 1st John 2, Verse 15. The apostle John, He writes, Do not love the world, Or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, The love of the Father, Is not in him.
[29:04] For all that is in the world, The lust of the flesh, The lust of the eyes, And the pride of life, Is not of the Father, But is of the world.
[29:16] And the world is passing away, And the lust of it, But he who does the will of God, God abides forever. Look what he says, In verse 16.
[29:28] He says, All that is in the world, The lust of the flesh, The lust of the eyes, And the pride of life. I believe we can see, Those three lusts, The things, The lusts of the, All those things, That are in the world, Of the world, We can see those three lusts, Right here in Genesis chapter 3, Because, As you see, In verse 6, It says, And the woman saw, That the tree was good for food, Good for food, That's, The lust of the flesh, Tastes good, And what does it say, It was pleasant to the eyes, It's the lust of the eyes, Looks good, Tastes good, It looks good, What else, A tree desirable, To make one wise, The pride of life, So you see, It's good for food, It's pleasant to the eyes, It's desirable to make one wise,
[30:30] In other words, It looks, It looks tasty, It looks good, And it feels good, So therefore, Just do it, So there is the danger, Of just following your heart, As Jeremiah chapter 17, Verse 9, Declares, The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked, Who can know it?
[30:54] The foundational issue, Is that the desires of our hearts, Stray, From the truth, From the way of truth, And goodness, When our hearts are not tethered, To the truth of God's word, The issue is, Are we walking by faith, Or are we walking by sight?
[31:19] Are we walking by, Trusting, What God has said to us? Or are we walking by, What we feel like? What things look like in the moment?
[31:33] So do not be deceived, To follow the lusts of the flesh, Hold fast to the word of God, The fourth deception, That man must be aware of, Is the lie, That you can cover, Your sin, You can cover up your sin, Hide your sin, From God's sight, Look in Genesis chapter 3, Verses 7 through 8, It says, Then the eyes of both of them were opened, When they partook of the fruits, Then the eyes of both of them were opened, And they knew that they were naked, And they sewed fig leaves together, And made themselves coverings, And they heard the sound of the Lord God, Walking in the garden, In the cool of the day, And Adam and his wife hid themselves, From the presence of the Lord God, Among the trees of the garden,
[32:34] We see here the sad aftermath, Of what happened after they rebelled, And ate of the fruit, They realized, As soon as they ate of the fruit, That something was terribly different now, It says, Their eyes were opened, They suddenly, Their conscience suddenly woke up, And they realized, There was something terribly wrong, That had happened, God's creation was compromised, The relationship with their creator, Was compromised, You see here, This is the introduction of death, And suffering, All because, It's foundationally rooted, In a disbelief, Of what the creator, Had given, The clear words that he had given, Disbelief of God's good care,
[33:36] For his creation, And we see here, The results, Their eyes were opened, And they knew that they were naked, And they sewed fig leaves together, To make themselves coverings, They suddenly realized, That they had fallen short, Of God's glory, And they realized, That we need to go back, We need to go back, Right now, But the problem is, Once man has fallen short, Of God's glory, He cannot, Just go back, By himself, This man's covering up, His sin, Strikes at the heart, Of what we know as, Religion, Did you know that Jesus hates religion?
[34:29] Religion, Is really, Man, Trying to get to God, Biblical Christianity, Teaches that, Man doesn't get to God, By his own works, God comes down to man, And saves man, Through Jesus Christ, Religion, Religion is all about man, Trying to get to God, By his own works, All men have fallen short, Of God's righteousness, That is the truth, Man cannot, Get back to God, And, Right all of his wrongs, On his own, You see, They sewed fig leaves together, To make themselves coverings, They, They realized, They needed to, Cover themselves, Because, Their consciences, They realized, That they were now sinful,
[35:30] But, Adam and Eve's, Attempt, At covering their sin, Was not sufficient, To cover up their shame, And guilt, As we see, You see here, They not only, Sow fig leaves together, To make themselves coverings, When they hear, The Lord God walking in the garden, They don't run to him, And speak with him, As at other times, It says, Adam and his wife, Hid themselves, From the presence of the Lord God, The foundational issue, Is that man, Cannot get to God, By his own efforts, But also, Man cannot hide, His sin from God, God is all places, He is everywhere, He is omnipresent, And as you, As we can see in, Psalm, 139, The psalmist declares,
[36:33] Where can I go, From your spirit, Or where can I flee, From your presence, If I ascend into heaven, You are there, If I make my bed in hell, Behold, You are there, If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there, Your hand shall lead me, And your right hand shall hold me, There is no way, There is no place, You can hide from God, It says, If I say, Surely the darkness shall fall on me, Even the night shall be light about me, Indeed, The darkness shall not hide from you, But the night shines as the day, The darkness and the light are both alike to you, So we cannot hide from God, God sees all things, We see later on in Genesis chapter 3, That Adam and Eve's attempt, At covering up their shame and their guilt, The aprons of fig leaves,
[37:35] Was not sufficient, Later on in Genesis chapter 3, Look in verse 21, It says, So what was wrong with, What was wrong with the fig leaves?
[37:58] It says God gave them tunics of skin, Where do you get a tunic of skin? You have to kill an animal, You see in scripture, The penalty for sin, Is death, The Bible teaches that blood has to be shed, In order for sin to be atoned for, Hebrews chapter 9 verse 22 declares, Without the shedding of blood, There is no remission of sins, So God in his perfect provision, Instituted, Sacrifice, Animal sacrifice, Blood sacrifice, Here, As the atonement for sin, We see all throughout the Old Testament, That God's people,
[39:02] Continually offered sacrifices, To, As, An act of obedience, As an act of faith, In the Lord, In his provision, And what these animal sacrifices, Would do, You see all throughout Leviticus, All the, Ordinances regarding, The sacrifices, Of lambs, And bulls, And goats, In the tabernacle, To cover up, Man's sin, And they must, They had to be repeated, Over, And over, And over, And over, And over again, To cover up man's sin, But Jesus Christ, Is the perfect, Lamb of God, Hebrews chapter 9 verse 12 declares, Not with the blood of, Goats and calves, But with his own blood, He entered, The most holy place, Once for all, Having obtained, Eternal,
[40:04] Redemption, So Jesus Christ, Is, The one that all, The Old Testament, Sacrifices pointed to, He, Is the only perfect, Sacrifice, He was, His blood, Because he was perfect, The spotless, Lamb of God, So only the blood of Christ, That could satisfy, The sin debt, Of all mankind, So we as mortal men, Can never attain, Redemption on our own, It must be a provision, Of God, So therefore, We understand that, The penalty for sin, Is death, And without the shedding of blood, There is no remission of sins, There cannot be restored, Relationship with the creator, Apart from the shedding of blood, Jesus Christ, Is that perfect sacrifice, And through Christ,
[41:06] We have the provision, Of eternal salvation, For all men, And when, You and I, Place our faith and trust, In Christ alone, For salvation, His righteousness, His perfect righteousness, Is imputed to our account, And our, Legal slate, Is wiped clean, By his blood, Before the throne of God, As we see in the, The song, Before the throne of God above, I have a strong, And perfect plea, A great high priest, Whose name is love, Whoever lives, And pleads, For me, Jesus Christ, Is the one, Who bore the wrath, For our sin, And provided eternal redemption, When our faith, We place our faith, And trust in him alone, For taking care of our sin, We're saved,
[42:07] And brought back into, That good relationship, With God that was destroyed, But beware, Man cannot hide, His sin from God, For God sees all things, And it is only, Through God's provision, That sin can be taken care of, Not through man, We cannot get to God, On our own, We trust Christ, And his provision, So may I remind you, Do not, Be led astray, By the lies, Of the devil, As James chapter 1, 16, Do not be deceived, My beloved brethren, Or Colossians, The apostle Paul, He says, Beware, Lest anyone, Deceive you, Cheat you, Through philosophy, And empty deceit, According to the tradition of men, According to the basic principles, Of the world, And not according to Christ, For in him, Jesus Christ, Dwells all the fullness,
