[0:00] kingship because of what he did Samuel said you know your dynasty will not rule and although he didn't take him off the crown at that point because that just didn't happen so he will run through his crown and these are things that's going to happen while this is going on but David was anointed by God after that to become king and we're going to see how that works out he's this musician and he sues his king or the king Saul when there's problems in his household and he's got that spirit that's in him because once he Samuel said that you're going to lose your kingship and he anointed David the spirit went into David but it went out of Saul or a bad spirit at least entered Saul and Saul had all kinds of problems and his fellow workers said hey we know this young man who can play the harp or not the harp yeah the court and he can come in and he can soothe you and that's what Saul used David in that capacity of course that capacity

[1:12] David was there he saw what was happening in the courts in the kingship courts and all that and he grew and then we see where David battled Goliath and the story there where he beheaded Goliath and now we're going into chapter 18 and we get in that with verses turn to 8 chapter 18 verses 1 now when he had finished speaking to Saul of course that is David and this happened after he he beheaded Goliath and they had this meeting and after he's done speaking to Saul the soul the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David and Jonathan loved him as his own soul that seems kind of quick there doesn't it you know we just start talking about Jonathan that he loves David like his own soul but this is probably not something that's new because we heard about Jonathan a couple chapters back and we know that he was in the court because he would have been a prince and David was there so

[2:21] Jonathan and David knew each other so that's how this relationship probably got built so he loved him as his own soul and so Saul took Saul took Saul took him that day and he would not let him go home to his father's house anymore so at this point King Saul says David you're going to be in my court and you will stay in my court and you'll be a part of that kingship there then Jonathan David made a covenant because he loved him as his own soul and Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David in his armor even to his sword and his bow and his belt so that's quite a quite a statement there so we've already seen that Jonathan was a man of faith and courage we saw that in the previous chapters Jonathan saw found a soul brother in David and we think that's just because that relationship that was building in those few years that that they were together there in the court this common purpose on their deepest level of life is what accounts for the love that Jonathan and David shared for one another they both had what they were different because they had that love for the Lord and whenever they went out and the things that they did they talked to the Lord about it they let the

[3:49] Lord guide them in their way that they did the battles whatever thing they did they had this relationship with the Lord and that was a big difference between them and their relationship with Saul because Saul did not have that and of course now at this point Saul has just lost everything and he has that evil spirit that's within him um so Jonathan loved David as he loved himself he loved David as he should have because of the relationship they had in the Lord now I want to talk about something here because this verse believe it or not and other verses that went well let's just say what they are second or first Samuel 20 17 Jonathan made David a vow again because of his love for him he loved him as he loved his own life second Samuel chapter 1 verse 26 and David says I am distressed for you brother for your love to me was more than the wonderful than the love of a woman and the lgb community you're at this point sometimes they're going to go to these verses and they're going to say hey why are you guys criticizing us why is this christian community down on this community your bible the one that you guys say is most important and you live your life by look at the verses that's in these bibles god has no problem no problem at all with a man and a man and they take these verses and that's what they use against people that's witnessing to them or that's criticizing their lifestyle and um it's it's a sad because they're taking these verses completely out of context these verses does not mean that these verse these verses mean they had a love and that love is a brotherly love a brotherly love and god has no problem with that men loving men and back at that point the the soul when somebody two men met each other and they had that kind of relationship they kissed they go one side and they go to the other side and it has nothing to do with that relationship that we're talking about and also if you they don't read the rest of the bible do they because if they read the rest of the bible they would you would see that god has a very um what do i want to say he goes against that lifestyle completely and we see that in the old testament all the way back in in genesis leviticus and all those we see it in romans chapter one and throughout the scripture where god talks about this and i think it's important important thing to bring up because in today's society it's just rampant and we have all this communication that's going on now with the well with everything it's just you can't even read the paper or you can't turn on the internet or tv without getting all this stuff thrown in your face and a lot of the people are saying hey it's in the bible john i think what happens there is they're just grasping at straws to vindicate the sinful nature that they have like everybody does yeah yep you're 100 right uh everybody has to defend herself and i think they see that this is probably wrong but this is what i want to do because this is the me generation and what's good for me is good and we're going to bring it up that way but anyway i thought that i'd just bring it up that really uh is not the context of what we're talking about here but they had this love

[7:53] for each other and we're going to see that and it's the phileo the phileo love the brotherly love verse four it uh seems to be that john jonathan is advocating his princehood what's he do at this point he takes off his robe he takes off his armor he takes off his his jewels and everything and he gives them to david now why would he do that that just doesn't seem to make sense jonathan is the next one in line for to be king but yet he's taken all his things off and he's given them to david and uh i don't know why at this point except david was anointed and how much jonathan or soul or king saul knew about that relationship that he was going to eventually be king i really don't know because it doesn't say in these chapters leading up to this but for some reason jonathan at this point says this is the man that's going to be king our future king and i don't understand it because that kingship should be mine but he's willing to give it up to david and that's what we see in this this thing where he takes his clothes off and he gives them to david and uh at that point you know david he accepted him and i don't know what he did with them i don't know if he put them on and warm or anything like that it doesn't say that but he accepted these and i think when he accepted them he knew that jonathan knew that eventually he was going to be the king and he accepted them with with humility i think at that point he could have said ah jonathan now you know what's going to happen don't you i'm going to be king me so watch your step because you're giving that kingship to me and i'm going to take it and i'm going to use it but no david didn't do that he accepted them and he was willing to stay in that family as he was and honor the king and honor jonathan so we're going to see that uh verses uh five and nine we see now that saul's gonna see something here that's going to make him completely jealous and it's just going to ruin his career and ruin his reputation ruin everything and we're going to see there in these verses saul is going to use david and he's going to send him out and when he says he's going to send him out he's going to send him out to the battles because these philistines are still still out there surrounding these people and they have many more people than the nation of israel does so he sends david out and he comes back and he has the victories and what does he make you david he makes him general he makes him the main man in his army and so he makes him general and he goes out and he does these conquerings now we're going to see in verses uh five and nine where david's or saul's jealousy comes in from the fact they come back and the people are they must have had a winning battle and the people are just out welcoming them singing praises and they're singing praises saul killed the thousands but they say and david killed the ten thousands and they were singing the women were singing everybody was singing and happy and joyful well guess what that doesn't make the king very happy does it hey you're saying i killed thousands but david killed ten thousands and at that point the relationship here is going to change

[12:00] and things are not going to get better for david uh we're going to see here in these chapters that david is in a learning process and i think god is using this to to train david as far as being king in the future and all these things that's going to come in today's life here in these chapters are going to help him to grow and be that man that he is and like i said this the whole subject on this this study is david the man david the king and these chapters now coming up is going to show david the man because he was much more than just a king because in his relationship in those years those 20 years that he's going through this because saul was king for another 20 years we're going to see that david took these things that came to his life and he used them he talked to god a lot of the psalms that david wrote were written during this time and if you go through the psalms you'll see a lot of those psalms what is david asking for from god he's asking for protection he said god these people are after me why is what is going on please be there for me and of course he as he as he goes through this he comes through the fact that yes god will be with you and we see that in a lot of the psalms uh that david wrote and he wrote them during this time that he's going through all this stuff so they come out they sing the songs to david and uh right off the bat jonathan gets that evil spirit within him and i'm sorry yeah saul we're going to see the attitude that saul has and uh and i hear not only did uh jonathan love david but all the people included even saul's servants those were the people who were most loyal to the king did too so we're going to see all the people were coming coming for david and god blesses personally those who relate to him properly they also become channels of blessings to others and that's exactly what was happening here with david david was a the things that he was doing the people favored him they liked him and he was blessing them as also as they was doing it so now we see what happens while they're sitting there with jonathan and king saul and david david david has a spirit saul has a spear in his hand and what's he do with it he has that tendency all these things man this man is just getting on my nerves he's taking away all the power that i have because of his favor with the people and he picks up this spear and he could say well the spirit is making me do this the devil is making me do this but no he had a choice and his choice at that point was to throw that spear at david and he threw that spear david it missed him and it went on the floor why he missed him i don't know from all from all records king saul was a mighty warrior so i would think that he could throw that spear and hit what he wanted to hit but he didn't it fell on the floor and he missed david and at that point david probably could have picked up that spear and thrown it back but again we see something in david david setting with the king and he's not going to take the opportunity that most people would have to continue that fight

[16:05] so what did david do he just fled from the scene at that point he didn't pick up the spear he didn't try to interact in saw in that type of capacity so paul had that or david king saul had that spirit in him that he wanted to kill david at that point says we move on get down to verses 17 and 30. we're going to see saul comes up with other things since he had been unsuccessful in murdering david himself saul also tried to get other people to kill him saul had promised his daughter in marriage to goliath the victor remember that when we were reading about goliath they were talking about well what what is king saul going to do for the guy that kills goliath and one of those things was i will give them my oldest daughter for marriage so this is this is a the the lady they're talking about here so in spite of this saul had no it no added uh saul now added to conthesian that david must also fight more battles for his king david on the other hand did not aspire to marry the king's daughter even though marriage would have advanced his career greatly he even dismissed the possibility since he could not afford a dowry saul went back on his promise to give david his older daughter marab away we see here that he had that chance to marry the daughter but he went to the king and he said king even if i wanted to marry your daughter i couldn't because it requires in this economy it required a diary that he had to give the king so now the king comes up with another plan oh okay he got his co-hearts to go out and say david that's okay you don't have to give the type of diary that most of the time is given to the person that requires a diary go out in battle and the king says if you bring back four skins of a two 100 four scans from this battle from the philistines then you will be able to bury her david didn't want to marry her to begin with but he went out and he did the battle and he came back but 200 so again we see this thing going between david and king saul and it just gets worse so we see god is protecting david he provided twice as many of the fourth kids that he's supposed to and we keep seeing in this chapter that king david gets more jealous and more jealous and more jealous of david this chapter illustrates the fact that god often uh suffer through godly people often suffer through no fault of their own it shows too that god causes even the worst intentions to the ungodly to strengthen the godly we see that in psalms uh seven and also romans 20 romans 8 28 for all things that come into your life can be used for good and this is what we see that is going on in david's life as he's going through these these times with king saul so we're going to see here the jealousy will eventually make you strike out at others jealousy starts on the inside but it doesn't stay there jealousy will most likely come out in some kind of a form where you take action and we see that's what's happening with king saul uh it's coming out you may not have a spear in your hand but

[20:10] you've got daggers in your eyes you may not throw a physical weapon but you will strike out in other ways with ugly words and hurtful actions and i think that's how we take these situations and and think about it in our lives in our community today you know a lot of times in our lives we may have this jealousy somebody's done something that that's just completely floored us and we have that jealous spirit in us and we don't get rid of that spirit it's going to just we'll get worse and worse and uh eventually it's going to blow up and it's going to come out and so that's not good there are a number of uh what we call sinless an evil vice in the bible and the order of the sins listed it's very interesting for example when we read romans 129 it says here they are full of envy murder strife deceit and malice they are gossip slanderers but what was the first word that came off in this envy jealousy we can also go to galatians 5 20 which lists the following in order jealousy fits of rage selfish ambition dissensions fractions first comes the word jealousy jealousy and and envy these type things can get in people's lives and they can disrupt them and it's no different today than it was back there in king saul's day if we let it just sit there and fester it's going to come out some way it's going to be disastrous for your life james 3 16 for where you have envy and selfish ambitions there you find this uh find disregard disregard and every evil practice so if you let this keep building up your life things are going to come out and the evil will come out that's that's it's associated with that jealousy so that's just something for us to think about that's what we're going to do we're going to do we're going to do we're going to do this chapter as we go through there you know david is or king saul is just coming out and wanting to do anything to get caved killed at this point he sends him out to all these battles and he goes out and he comes and becomes a victor and he comes back and he doesn't brag about it he just does it he is loyal to the king in everything he does so now let's turn to chapter 19 and verse one but jonathan saul's son delighted greatly in david so jonathan told david saying my father seeks to kill you therefore please be on your guard until morning and stay in a secret place and hide and i will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are and i will speak with my father about you then what i observe i will tell you so at this point jonathan knows about his dad about king saul and he knows that he's going to do anything he can to kill this man and jonathan at this point is going to try to talk his talk the king out of have this attitude about killing king or david so saul now abandons the pretense and ordered jonathan and his soldiers to put david david to death he went public with his attacks against david feeling driven like the pharaoh of the plagues to bore uh desperate measures this created a conflict of lordities lordities for jonathan who needed to honor

[24:15] his father king but who has also loved david jonathan chose to tell david what saul's intentions were but he also tried to honor his father by urging him not to kill david can you imagine the spot that jonathan is at that point you know here he is to be the next king he's the prince of king saul and he's got this battle going on hey my dad is trying to kill david i have to honor my father because i'm the prince but i love david david has that same spirit that i have and i love this man and uh so he was in a bad spot so this created conflicts uh he appealed to saul logically and rationally he reminded saul that he was the king and that david was a servant that he needed to be fair with david and that it was in saul's best interest to let saul or to let david live he also reminded saul that david was the lord's instrument who had defeated israel's enemies and that saul had rejoiced in his success more ever he appealed to the justice david's death was unwarned so he'd given all these reasons to the king why he shouldn't do this and what happens at that point the king says okay jonathan i'm not going to go out and kill david anymore i heard what you said and i believe you and things will be better between us verses eight through ten again david has to have to escape and verses eight and there was war again and david went out and fought with the philistines and struck them with a mighty blow and they fled from him now the distressing spirit of the lord came upon saul as he sat in his house with the spear in his hand and david was playing music with his hand then saul sought to pin david to the wall with the spirit but then david slipped away from saul's presence and he drove the spear into the wall so saul or david sped through the night he flew so i think at this point david's finally saying whoa i think i'm in trouble spiritually these were warning clouds of the coming storm it was david's success that aroused saw saul's jealousy before when david was successful again surely saul would be tempted to jealousy again and we've seen that that's what exactly happened every time david went out fought for the king he won the people were always happy but king saul had that spirit evil spirit within him and he just could not be satisfied so saul wavered from his challenge of heart to that he broke to a jonathan did not kill david all that was thrown away as easily as his spear as he throwed it again so again he breaks his promise and david's on the run again david had to flee and escape but the spear remained so uh he tried to kill him that just didn't work david's gone the spear is still there he missed him this is a third reference to an evil spirit affecting saul from now on david was no longer able to stay in saul's presence but he had to flee and escape seeking rescues from the king wherever he could find it david's days as a fugitive living beyond the king's reach which began here would continue until saul's death and we're going to see that as we continue on in the next chapters saul's reactism react react reactivity to the mission of david putting to death by now using the daughter

[28:23] michael and his words resoddled in dave's safety temporarily so now he didn't get the daughter that that that king saul had promised so now he's offering his younger daughter to saul and at this point uh saul or david takes her as his wife and we're going to see that this lady loved david so now we have king saul he has a son and he has a daughter and they both loved david so uh as a father he's in a bad situation because he's got his family that's going against his principles and it's going to show up here uh and what we see is at this point king saul tries to use his daughter to trap david and they're at home and king saul has sent his men to the home and he's going to go in he's going to capture david and take him but at this point the wife says david they're coming my father has came to me he's told me what he's going to do and i love you and i'm not going to let it happen so she fixed it so he could get out the window and she put something in the bed to make it look like the king or that david was still in the bed and at that point david was able to flee again and when they when the king found out about it of course he was distressed because again now he has a daughter that should have loyalties to him but that lord he kind of switched over to david and we see that at that point so david's on to flee again and at this time he is going to go to who who's the man that anointed david he was kind of a spiritual leader in david's life he's going to flee to where samuel's at and at this point he goes to samuel who is in ramah and david did the right thing when verses eight or chapter 19 verses 18 so david fled and escaped and went to samuel at ramah and told him all that saul had done to him and he said samuel went and stayed in north david did the right thing when in difficult and confusing situations he spent some time with a godly man now we know samuel uh was one of the last judges he was also a prophet and he was a godly man and he's the one who brought king david and anointed him and it was very uh now david flees to him to get spiritual advice to say king saul was or king saul is doing all this to me why is it happening and of course samuel can't answer that question except for the fact he knows that the evil spirit is gone into the king saul and uh at that point he just brings him in and they have uh worshiping going on at that area now king uh saul finds out or some way that king that david went to where samuel was at and at this point he sends his men out and these men are to are to go to ramah and they're to capture david but with all the spiritual things that were going at that point the prophesizing and all the things that were going on at that point when the men went there they got involved in the prophesies and in the worshiping and that was kind of strange you know the men that saul sent his warriors so the information gets back to saul what is saul well i'm going to go

[32:29] myself i can't get these guys to do the job for me i guess i have to do it myself now he also goes to ramal and what we see there is the fact that he can't do it either he starts prophesizing although i think that prophesizing is false and they say king saul is prophesizing also you know he had a reputation now and i think the people knew that uh this was all fake and uh so it's just the chapter closes uh he is losing his respiration is saul also among the prophets they defamed him saying well they just did not believe saul you know saul was not prophesizing for god at all if he was doing it at all so this is kind of hard for the people to buy the three instances of david's deliverance in this chapter show how god preserved his anointed he also used both nature and supernatural means to do so since god is anointed christians with his spirit we see that in john 220 this record of how god preserves his anointed should be an encouragement to us all and i think as we get to become christians and we have the holy spirit come into our life that spirit is there and god's going to use it for you just like he used it for david back then years and years ago and i think it's amazing that the way god deals with people does not change change it does not change if we're for god god is going to be for us and he's going to take care of us we have any questions about these two chapters i know they're going fast through these chapters but uh the purpose of this study is to get to david and what he was as a man and not to go through all the details but uh i think it's becoming very apparent that david has a spirit within him that uh he's not going to go against god he's not going to go against the king because at this point uh he has it he has a job to do and that job is to learn yes roger i find it interesting uh saul was inhabited by an evil spirit so there's a there's a definitely a difference between salvation in the old testament and salvation in the new because i understand an evil spirit cannot occupy a sealed christian but uh saul let let the bad things get to him and uh and it's amazing that god let him continue for another 20 years yeah knowing who he was and who he was going to be so that's a different salvation back then because uh we don't do you think he was saved when he died no i don't think it was it don't look good does it no yeah i think in the old testament was was definitely different than the new testament and you're exactly right when we accept christ and the spirit comes into our life it's permanent it's there and i think we've seen and i think we talked about this last week a little bit in the old testament god used these men he anointed them for a purpose and that purpose was to do what god wanted to be done at that point and at some point those spirit that's spirit that god put in them left and other spirits came into them so yeah i believe at that point now was there people back then who accepted god and stayed in their life of course but also god had let

[36:32] them that spirit could also leave it depended on the situation at that point so yes anything else john in the story about when he goes home and his wife is sitting out the window it says that she used the household idol yeah to to disguise the fact that david wasn't there so there was still quite a bit of idolatry going on in israel yes there was so i thought that was interesting yeah yeah that was an interesting part of the story where you know the king's daughter went against the king and of course helped the husband which is what she should have done and she did anything else uh we're going to be getting into i'm not going to start chapter 20 because i know we couldn't get it finished uh but we're next week we're going to get into chapter 20 and it's a very interesting chapter and the fact that the things that's going on he goes to jonathan again say jonathan my friend what's going on what's going on he's not going to stop and jonathan comes up well there's one other thing we can try and we're going to try that and see what happens and so we'll see that next week also once we get through with chapter 20 for chapter 21 through 31 i'm going to do a very abbreviated because there's a lot of stuff going on a lot of battles a lot of stuff that's just a lot of facts that's going on in there but the main thing i want to get is hit the spots where david is involved and you see the fact that david the man he's god's man and he's not going to let these things affect him the way that it would most people at that point so we're going to see that as we go through all those chapters and a lot of interesting things that happen during those chapters and of course we're going to get to the end of of samuel and we're going to see what happens at that point and of course we see that uh king david or king david not at that point king saul and jonathan will be killed in this last battle that's going on with the philippines or the flip or yeah and it's interesting the fact this whole time the philistines are always involved and these people just never let up on it on israel did from every step and we're going to continue to see this the philistines the philistines and the philistines we're even going to see that when we get into second samuel and and david takes over the kingship these philistines philistines or a mighty people and they also had the technology that just was not available to the nation of israel and they had that because they covered such a wide area they were out there by the seaports and they could get some of this stuff that was coming in from other places so they had the steel and they had the the opportunity to make these weapons and so they were always in that picture okay anything else before we close this morning all right we'll see you next week
