[0:00] God chose him, God used him, yes, he was a man, he also failed, and he became king, and he was a good king, and we finished up 1 and 2 Samuel.

[0:13] Today I wanted to finish up in Kings, because that's where we're going to see the final days of King David. And as we turn to 1 Kings, chapter 1, now King David was old, advanced in years, and they put covers on him, but he could not get warm, therefore his servants said to him, Let a young woman, a virgin, be sought for our Lord the king, and let her stand before the king, and let her care for him, and let her lie in your bosom, that the Lord the king may be warm.

[0:48] So we see that the king is getting old now, he's having trouble, he's in bed most of the time. I think he's probably around 70 years old, and he reigned for 30 years, and so we see that he had a long time in his leaning.

[1:07] And they brought this lady in, and she cared for him, and the fact that she laid in his bosom and all that, that is not sexual at all.

[1:19] That's from the fact that she was there to comfort him, and that was not an uncommon thing back in those days. It was kind of one of the medicines, really, that people could do that, because the warmth on the body makes a difference in your health problems, so we have that.

[1:37] But, what also indicated that Paul has now gotten weak, Paul, David, okay. David has gotten weak, and we know that he is near the end of his ministry.

[1:53] And guess what? He still had another son, and if you read on there, Adonijah, the son of Haggad, exalted himself, saying, I will be the king, and he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen and 50 men to run before him.

[2:12] Does that sound familiar? One of other David's sons, Absalom, did the same thing, and he tried to take over the kingship before he was in line, but God had other purposes.

[2:30] And it was not for Absalom to be king, and we found out what happened to Absalom during his time and with the war he created and everything else. But now we have another son, and these sons that we're talking about are the first sons that he had, which would have been back when he first became king of Judah, not of Israel and Judah.

[2:52] And that's the wives that he had at that point, and these are the sons that we're talking about here. So he was one of those sons. And he had the men, he got the chariots in, and he decided that he was going to have people on his side.

[3:07] He was a good salesman, a good politician, just like his brother. And he convinced the people that he could take over the kingship. So he gathered all the people and brought them to a place and said, I'm going to be king.

[3:20] And they put it up with that. Well, now somebody else comes back on the scene, and that would be Nathan. We haven't heard from Nathan and the rest of Samuel, except for the fact that he was there present when he had the thing with Bathsheba.

[3:37] And he's the one that confronted David, and that's really the last that we heard of him. Now he's coming back, and he goes to Bathsheba and said, Bathsheba, we know what's going to happen.

[3:51] That first son that you had, which was Solomon, that's who God wants to be king. This son of David is trying to establish a kingdom and take it away from him.

[4:03] You need to go to King David in his bed and let him know what's going on. Because if Anandagia takes over, the first thing he's going to do, which is what kings did back in that day, was destroy the rest of the family.

[4:21] I mean, he could not take over a kingship if there were still people left. And he knew that he would kill Bathsheba. He would kill Solomon. So you need to get to David because we know that David has been promised, or David, God has talked and made it known that Solomon is his choice for king.

[4:46] So Nathan and Bathsheba set this up. But she was going to go in and explain to David what was going on. She says, do you even know that Adonijah is doing this?

[4:59] And of course he did not because he's been laid up. And after she explained the fact, he said, you know that Solomon is supposed to be king. And then Nathan also came in and explained the same thing to him as you're reading down through the chapter there.

[5:16] And Nathan said, we know, do you know that Adonijah is trying to take over your kingship? And of course he didn't. And at that point, David says, I will fulfill the promises that I've made.

[5:32] And Solomon will be the next king. And I will take care of that now. And he set up the process with the priest and with Samuel and all of them to get on board.

[5:47] Now another interesting thing that's going on here was when Adonijah started this coup, he also got some of the priests to go along with him.

[5:59] And he also got Joab. Now Joab has been with King Solomon since the start. He was his general. He fought many wars with him.

[6:10] He did all these things. Now he did some bad things there too. He had some of these people killed that King David didn't want killed. But he switched over with Adonijah.

[6:22] And so did some of the priests, which made it look like this was an official type thing going on. And they had it going on. And now King David says, no, I'm going to make Solomon king.

[6:40] And that's exactly what they were doing. And so he set it up with Samuel and the other priests. And on that day, he set it up so that they would also anoint him as king.

[6:57] And so Zadok, the priest, the Dathan, the prophet, anointed him king. David wanted the proclamation of Sodom as his successor to be persuaded.

[7:08] He had four points, four points or five points to come in. Ride on my mule. Let Zadok, the priest, and Nathan, the prophet, anoint him. Blow the horn.

[7:20] Say, long live King Solomon. He shall come and sit on my throne. And these are the things that King said. Go out and do these things.

[7:32] And this is what's going to be going on. One of the things that Solomon said. Ride on King David's mule. Apparently, this was the Old Testament equivalent of a presidential motorcade.

[7:49] You know? The mule. The mule was something special in ancient Israel. Since Heberic law forbade crossbreed mules.

[8:01] So, it was important. So, this is something that was very expensive. And only certain people had it. Of course, the king had the mule. When he rode, he rode on this special mule.

[8:12] And this is what he said. Be sure that he rides on the mule. So, this was going on. These people were anointing.

[8:28] I'm getting confused with my names. There are so many names. But they were. Alright. Solomon. Sorry about that.

[8:39] They were anointing Solomon. At the same time, Ananiah was trying to took over the kingship. Now, the scripture reads kind of like they were in the same location.

[8:49] Now, whether they were or not. Because as Ananiah was taking over the process. And they were having this big feast. It says that they heard the horns.

[9:00] And the shouting. Hail King Solomon. So, all of a sudden. Another priest comes in and tells. What's going on.

[9:12] That King David has made Solomon. King. And now, Ananiah is in a hard spot. Because he was trying to take over the kingship.

[9:24] And he knew what should happen to him. That he should be executed. For doing such a thing. And he went to Solomon.

[9:36] And Solomon gave him a reprieve. And said, as long as you behave. You do not try to take over my kingship. I will not kill you.

[9:47] And that's pretty much how chapter one of Kings ends. And we see that King David is still around. We see the story about the takeover.

[10:00] That it did not happen. King Solomon has been anointed king. And now we turn to chapter two. The final acts of King David.

[10:16] Now the days of David. The first one there. Now the days of David grew near that he should die. And he charged Solomon his son. Saying, I go the way of the earth.

[10:28] Be strong. Therefore, and prove yourself a man. Keep the charge of the Lord your God. To walk in all his ways. To keep the statutes. His commandments. His judgments.

[10:40] His testimonies. As it is written. In the law of Moses. That you may prosper in all that you do. Wherever you turn. That the Lord may fulfill his word.

[10:51] Which he spoke concerning me. Saying, if your sons take heed. To their way. To walk before me. In truth. With all their heart. And with all their soul.

[11:01] He said, you shall not lack a man. On the throne of Israel. And this is a story. That God has been telling David all along. David, I'm setting up this kingdom.

[11:13] And it's going to become. Through your lineage. Through your family. Through Judah. You're going to sing this kingship. And eventually. That king.

[11:24] As we know. Will be Jesus Christ. Our Lord. So this is the warning. Or the. Some of the last sayings. David had with Solomon.

[11:34] He said. Keep your ways. With the Lord. And the Lord. Will be with you. And. The Lord was with me. All the years that I was there.

[11:45] And he has said. His promise. Is your generation. To the next generation. If you obey my commands. You know. That's. Something we see clear.

[11:56] Through the Old Testament. As you read through the Old Testament. If you obey my commands. Israel. Israel. I have all the things in the world for you.

[12:08] All you have to do is obey. And. And. Of course. We know. The rest of the Old Testament. You see how it just goes from one. Generation to the next. And.

[12:20] We see that. Even today. How the generation changes. From one generation to the other. Where. We have things going great. And all of a sudden. Something comes in. Satan takes over.

[12:32] And the next generation. Could be bad. That's the same thing. What happened to all these kingships. And. After King David. That. That kingdom was established.

[12:43] Solomon is the next one. To carry that forward. And we're going to see it. Carried forward. Through the rest. Of the Old Testament. Through the. Mainly through the tribe of Judah.

[12:54] But. We also are going to see all the. The kings and stuff of. The ten tribes. And of Judah. But. He gives us. These things to. To.

[13:06] Solomon. And he said. My time is growing near. And he. As he did this. He said. I have some other things to tell you. And. David.

[13:19] He didn't kill some of the people. That he should have. He should have killed Joab. Joab killed his son. After he said.

[13:30] Don't kill my son. And that was an amazing thing. Right there. Why David didn't kill him on the spot. But he didn't. He also killed some other people.

[13:41] That David didn't know. On him to kill. So he said. Don't. Let this. Go away. Take care. Of Joab. He had some other people.

[13:53] That he wanted to take care of. Let's see. Where are they? One of them was Joab.

[14:06] Because Joab. Had killed his own son. Also. He killed Abner. The. The king. That was set up. After King Saul. Which was not a regular kingdom.

[14:17] But he was. He tried to set up that kingship. And. Joab killed him. And a Messiah. Who was also. The person that. King David. Put in charge.

[14:28] When he took. Joab. Away from the general. Or from the leading of the army. After he killed his son. And that's the only thing he did. He took that leadership away from him. But.

[14:38] As. He's going in battle. Joab killed. This man also. And. And see you have a. See you have a. Shemai. A bejemite.

[14:49] Who cursed me with malicious curses. In the day I was fleeing. From Absalom. He. He. Came down to meet me at the Jordan River. After the war. And I swore to him.

[14:59] That the Lord saying. I will not put you to death. With a sword. Now therefore. Do not hold him guiltless. For you are a wise man. And know that you ought to do to him.

[15:10] But bring his hair down. Gray. Hound. Gray hair down. To the grave. With blood. And he had also said that same thing. About Joab. So.

[15:20] David wanted Solomon. To begin his reign. In justice. And. To give first justice to Joab. Who was guilty of murder. And then also to.

[15:34] To. Selah. For the things that he had done. And. So this is started process. So many people think that David.

[15:48] Did not command Jacob's execution. During his lifetime. Because Joab knew about the murder of Uriah. This. The husband of Bathsheba. This idea is that Joab.

[16:00] Used this knowledge. As blackmail against David. However. It would seem that Joab's knowledge. Was only effective as blackmail. If no one else knew about it.

[16:11] And everybody knew about it. I mean it was proclaimed. And. Nathan came. And told him all the things that was going to happen. And. All the people knew.

[16:21] What happened. With that thing with Bathsheba. So. That was not the case. There was another reason. David did not kill Joab. For one thing.

[16:32] He was a great friend. And he. With him in all these battles. But for some reason. He did not know. But. For Solomon. For Solomon.

[16:43] To take over the kingship. David was saying. There's things that you need to do. To give justice. To the things that happened before. I want you to start this kingship.

[16:56] With a clean slate. That would be like. Kind of like. Today. If we had somebody take over as president. Saying. Okay. I'm wiping out Congress.

[17:06] And. Everything. We're starting with a new slate. And. I don't know. Maybe we should do that. Do that on a. At least a five to ten.

[17:17] Or eight year period. It seems like. We need to get rid of some of these people. That's been in office for. Forty and fifty years. But this is kind of what David is doing.

[17:28] He's setting up the process. To clear the things that was going on. That were bad in David's life. The things that David didn't take care of. But he wanted this to happen.

[17:41] So we see that. One of the things that also happened. Here in chapter two. We see Bathsheba. Or. Not Bathsheba. But. The young man.

[17:53] That just tried to take over the kingship. Went to Bathsheba and said. I've been saved. But there's one thing I want. But you promised to me.

[18:03] That you would go to Solomon. The king now. And ask if he could bury. This lady that came. To assist David.

[18:15] That we see there in chapter one. Of chapter one. And. Bathsheba bought into this. And she went to King David. And she said. We know all the things that he has done for you.

[18:27] Done to you. But will you. Do this one favor for me. And let him marry this lady. And of course. Solomon caught on and said.

[18:37] Whoa. Lord. Let it never be. He said. This man. Is going to try to take over this kingship. If he gets part of the.

[18:48] Concubines. Or whatever. That David has already established. And get a charge. Then he can start. Doing the thing to take. Start taking over again. And of course. At that point.

[18:59] He says. Okay. Enough is enough. And he put him to death. So we see that. He is put to death. And. A few verses on down.

[19:09] You're going to see that. Joab is also put to death. And we also see. As you go. A few verses down. We're going to see that Shimei.

[19:21] He was not put to death. But. Because he said. Solomon said. Shimei. You deserve death. But I'll tell you what. I'm going to give you your reprieve.

[19:32] I want you to. Establish a place. Here in Jerusalem. And do not leave this city. Seems like a pretty. Good request.

[19:43] Right? I mean. You're going to be killed. All you have to do. Is stay in the city. But for some reason. Something happened. With somebody. Kenny Flynn. Or whatever. But he left.

[19:54] Jerusalem. And King Solomon says. Okay. Now is my chance. And he also put. Him. To death. And we're going to see that. As chapter 2.

[20:05] Ends. We see that David. Also had died. And he was buried. In the city of David. And Solomon. Sat on the throne.

[20:16] Of his father. And his kingdom. Was established. Forever. Forever. And that forever. Means. That kingdom. Is still.

[20:27] Going to happen. And. The kingdom. Lasted all the way through. Most of the Old Testament. All the way through. Even through the. The dispersion. But after that dispersion.

[20:40] And. We had the 400 years. Of silence. A new person. Came on board. It was Jesus Christ. And he's. Going to be established. A king.

[20:51] That God has been. Talking about. This whole time. Clear through the history. Of the nation of Israel. And all these things. He was talking about.

[21:01] Jesus Christ. The son of God. Being king. Of this earth. And that is going to happen. And of course.

[21:12] This kingdom. Has already been established. Through him. And through his death. But it has not. Taken place. Where it's been fulfilled. At this point.

[21:24] And that fulfillment. Is still to come. And we are in the process. Where this middle step here. Before this kingdom. Can be established. And when God says.

[21:35] It is time. This period of grace. That we are in. Which is just amazing. The grace that he has established. For us. That we don't have to go through.

[21:46] All the loops. And things. That all the. The nations had to go through. To become. A son of God. Jesus Christ. Fulfilled that for us. And he's going to do that.

[21:58] Again. At the second coming. And he will be king. So. That ends. Chapter two. Chapter three. You're going to see. All the things.

[22:08] That David. That's been complete. All the. The. Things that. That needed to be taken care. Was taken care of. And. Solomon is starting.

[22:19] With a clean slate. And Solomon. Takes off. And starts off. This new kingdom. And God. Came to him. One night.

[22:29] And said. Solomon. I will give you. Whatever you want. What is it. That you want. And what did. King Solomon.

[22:40] Tell him. God. Give me wisdom. I am but a child. Give me the wisdom.

[22:50] To lead these people. To guide them. And God said. Solomon. You came to me. Asking for wisdom.

[23:02] And I don't know. If any other man. Would have done such a thing. They would have asked. For riches. And wealth. But he said. Solomon. I will give you. Wisdom.

[23:12] Beyond any man. And along with that. I will also give you. All the riches. Of the world. And as you go through.

[23:23] The rest of it. The first kings. You're going to see. How Solomon takes over. And he has the wisdom. Wisdom. Wisdom. He died.

[24:02] I did die. Ok. and so we see Solomon as a great king again he's he's a man and we're going to see before the kings ends up that Solomon does a lot of different things he's got a harem that even outdid David's and I don't know back then they just liked a lot of wives I don't know why I don't know if you got a good wife why do you need more right okay but that's kind of the thing of it is Solomon and of course the history is going to be set and we're going to get after Solomon goes and getting he's a nation of Judah we're going to see a split after Solomon that you know we're going to have the Judah going one way and the nation of the ten tribes going the other way and we're going to see all this activity going on so that is the end of the David the man and David the king and what's the main thing we can take away from David being the man and David being the king he was a man after God's own heart and when you're within God's favor nothing nothing is ever going to take that away from you no matter what we do he's there for us does that mean oh hey I can do anything yes it does mean you can do anything but you're going to pay for the things you do do and God is not going to let us off the hook but he will be with us and guide us through our life and he's made us promises that are just amazing and any questions any comments before we close up this study on David yes Roger one thing that hit me in chapter one early on is verse six especially since it's father's day and it's given there almost like an aside almost like a sideways statement but regarding Adonijah possibly Absalom too as I think about it there's a comment that God told us to listen to and it is that his father that is David had never crossed him yeah there's a one of the big important things in family life is that dad has to charge his sons and then you go to chapter two the charge to Solomon was a great one yeah remember God yeah and obey God yeah and I think a lot of that happened that just hit me yeah very good and that's a good father's day message hey as a father you don't let your sons get away with stuff

[27:10] I think a lot of that may have happened after King Solomon had that thing with Bathsheba and God said hey your life what did I say again anyway you know what I'm talking about I get my words mixed up sometimes but after he had did that he said your life is going to change David your life is going to change your attitude is going to change because of what you did you cannot get away with it you got away with adultery and you got away with murder so you're not going to get away with it and his life changed forever yeah any other comments yes David well just as we're you know finishing all this up and all the I mean all the bizarre things that happened I mean David's life is kind of a mess yeah and it's almost like a daytime soap opera right with all the things that's going on oh yeah yeah but yeah but

[29:01] Right. That's all God requests of us.

[29:14] Just come to me. Follow my commands. And I will love you. I always love you. I loved you before. But when you do fail, expect something from that failure.

[29:29] But I will still be with you. And I think that's the message for us today. No matter what's going on in our life, it's not so bad that God cannot forgive you.

[29:46] Forgiveness is one of God's main things. And now we're forgiven. And it's thrown into the deepest sea.

[29:57] And it's automatic. Jesus died and he forgave us of our sins when we come through him. They're already taken care of. That's amazing grace.

[30:09] How great to sound. Any others? Okay. Well, thank you. And I think Roger will be starting something in a couple weeks.

[30:24] Okay. Very good. Thank you. Have a good day. Thank you.
